Choosing a coursework title.

All essay titles must be in the form of a question.

So, for example, "THE HISTORY OF IBM" would not be an acceptable title but "WHAT WAS THE ROLE OF IBM IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SUPER-COMPUTER?" would be possible.

All essay titles should be approved by one of the lecturers on the unit.

You don't have to get our approval but experience has shown that a significant number of the people who go ahead without checking first with us, end up by making poor essay title choices which inevitably result in lower marks.

How do I choose a title?

We recommend that you begin by looking carefully at the suggested AREAS given in the unit handbook (these are also available via the HoC website). When something appeals to you, the next step is to check that you can get hold of a reasonable selection of reputable sources. Each of our suggested areas comes with recommended reading but there is no guarentee that these materials will be available in the Frewen. Having got source material you should use it to focus in on a particular area that seems interesting to you. Then you should construct a question which will form the title of your essay and which you will attempt to answer. It is a good idea to come up with more than one proposed title. When you have done this, check with the unit lecturers and get some feedback - usually we will approve your title but sometimes we have suggestions to offer.

When your title has been approved then you should set about making an essay plan and getting to down to the detailed work.
